OUTDOOR BBQ

I love that summer nights are often spent outside.

We grill as much as we can, and invite friends and family over to share in conversation.  One of my goals before summer's end is to find a small charcoal grill and bring it with me to the waterside.  I'm not very good at cooking out of my element or on a whim, but something about an early morning, secluded beach just sounds so magical.  It's hard to think that we only have a few months of this beautiful weather left, but we're enjoying it while we can!

What are some of your summer plans?

  1. I love to BBQ too on our deck and invite my daughters friends over, my favorite thing to do is hang out with these teenagers. some of them don't have the best support from their parents, so I like to really pay attention to them.
We also have game nights too!

I have been going to the beach more than usual--it was one of my goals this summer, it feels so good on my body, I like to lay there and write lists:o

I also want to go to the State Fair this year, I haven't gone in years!

Oh I'm also going to Milwaukee next weekend for 4 days for Italian Fest!!!

  2. Yes please! We actually grill all year round because we live grilled food so much :) but it happens double time in the summer, and we do a lot of campfire cooking with friends, too. Oh summer.

  3. Here in the UK we've had the 'wettest summer on record'. So needless to say it's been very disappointing. I'm jealous of your al fresco dining. And if we had the weather I would definitely love to do some beach cooking early in the morning or late into dusk. Lovely idea!

Easter Weekend

Hello! Happy mid-week to you. This is the roll of photos we shot over our Easter weekend , and oh what a wonderful weekend it was. It was so nice to have family here to visit - even if the weather was cooler than we anticipated! We visited the redwoods in Felton, ate vegetarian burritos, went to the epic shoreside in Montara, and the brewing company in Half Moon Bay. Our hearts are full and our home is feeling quite empty now ;) As a side note, I've found a renewed love with film. This is a post for another time, but it bears mentioning here! There has been much on my mind re: photography, and hopefully this will be the space I can share that. For the curious, all the above were shot on a Nikon FM10 with Fuji Superia 400 speed film.

bump : week 22

I've said it before, but if I could pack up and move my entire family straight into the By The Barkers studio space, I would. Absolute heaven! As for our little one, he or she has been giving me strong, swift kicks - especially around bed time.  Waves and ripples dance across my belly as I lay in bed waiting, watching.  I'll admit, it's been difficult for Erick and I since we've decided to keep things a surprise as far as the gender.  We were both so used to the feeling of knowing with Sofia that it's made this pregnancy a completely unique experience.  My intuition keeps swaying back and forth wondering if this little one is a boy or girl, and judging by the way that I look, feel and eat, my best guess is that we have another little lady on the way. (Though, if you ask Sofia, she's already told us she thinks baby is a "bruh-der")  !!! Mamas out there, was your intuition right? Any tell-tale signs or...

welcoming fall: hiking together

A while back, I had posted about dreading the change of the season.  I was so caught up in my whirlwind of a summer, the beautiful weather, the bare feet, the music and late night dancing in the wilderness, camping, and vacations that I barely remembered or welcomed the un-rushed pace that comes with the beginning of fall. Living in the middle of the city has been a blessing for finding new, exciting and bustling places to eat and explore, but so many times I'm wishing for the opportunity to do something a little less... urban .  I grew up in the country, and Erick, in the city- so now we've been doing our best to give our child the best of both worlds. We took a drive about 40 minutes south of the city to a little place in the suburbs and welcomed the crisp and cool air that kissed our cheeks as we embarked on a tiny adventure in the forest.  Hiking with a toddler is such an enriching exper...
