in the city: publican quality meats

A craving for sandwiches instead of brunch, this weekend we ventured to a spot in the heart of the industrialized, hip party of the city.

Publican Quality Meats is a sister company of one of our favorites for a gorgeous dinner, The Publican. Specializing in charcuterie, pastries, sandwiches, and boasting an ever changing menu, PQM is the perfect casual dining experience.  One of my favorite features was the upscale grocery market featured on the inside of the restaurant.  All the meats used in your meal you can order to-go straight from the butcher-- still kicking myself over not bringing some thick cut bacon home for breakfast.  Ah, next time!

I've been thinking lately of compiling all of these places we've visited in the city to make it easier to research and find... definitely an upcoming organizational project I've been working on in terms of the blog.  I hope to have a more steady flow of columns here, after a year of writing, loving, and tending to this blog, I've realized how incredibly important it is to me.

This is going to be the best year yet.

  1. I think that's a great idea! I'd love to have access to a list of these places you've written about. Josh and I spent our honeymoon in chicago and have been talking about visiting again - someday. It would be awesome to know where to go for brunch and such instead of resorting to chains and tourist stops like Ditka's Steakhouse ;)

  2. You had me at coke in a bottle.

I'm always a sucker for blog columns, so obviously I love your idea of compiling a list of Chicago eats. You could even organize them by cafe, deli, breakfast, etc.

Chris and I visit every couple of months, but always end up eating at our tried and true favorites (like the Cozy Noodle... have you guys ever been there? So good.)

  3. An idea I have, that I don't think exists, even though there is Yelp--but would be to gather the greatest, trendiest, tastiest, most unique amazing spots to visit in each city including restaurants, coffeehouses, museums, parks, dog parks, etc...and have it be a very simple website that you can search each city and have it be simple to read etc..is there anything like this!? haha

Easter Weekend

Hello! Happy mid-week to you. This is the roll of photos we shot over our Easter weekend , and oh what a wonderful weekend it was. It was so nice to have family here to visit - even if the weather was cooler than we anticipated! We visited the redwoods in Felton, ate vegetarian burritos, went to the epic shoreside in Montara, and the brewing company in Half Moon Bay. Our hearts are full and our home is feeling quite empty now ;) As a side note, I've found a renewed love with film. This is a post for another time, but it bears mentioning here! There has been much on my mind re: photography, and hopefully this will be the space I can share that. For the curious, all the above were shot on a Nikon FM10 with Fuji Superia 400 speed film.

welcoming fall: hiking together

A while back, I had posted about dreading the change of the season.  I was so caught up in my whirlwind of a summer, the beautiful weather, the bare feet, the music and late night dancing in the wilderness, camping, and vacations that I barely remembered or welcomed the un-rushed pace that comes with the beginning of fall. Living in the middle of the city has been a blessing for finding new, exciting and bustling places to eat and explore, but so many times I'm wishing for the opportunity to do something a little less... urban .  I grew up in the country, and Erick, in the city- so now we've been doing our best to give our child the best of both worlds. We took a drive about 40 minutes south of the city to a little place in the suburbs and welcomed the crisp and cool air that kissed our cheeks as we embarked on a tiny adventure in the forest.  Hiking with a toddler is such an enriching exper...

what sofia eats, v.1

grape tomatoes, avocado, grilled veggie burger and annie's cheddar bunnies             green seedless grapes with pancakes             cheddar potato pierogis, tangerine slices, garlic pearled couscous with corn           Diapers & Skinny Jeans will be slowly introducing more and more new, original content over the next coming weeks, and I'm excited to announce I'm bringing back the "What Sofia Eats" portion of the blog to you.  (Especially since it doesn't consist of rice cereal and mashed bananas anymore!)  Since I started a bit late, I only have three meals to show you this week-- but, I'm hoping to catch every meal for the next seven days.  I know I've personally struggled at times with finding inspiration for kiddo meals, so I figure if anyone else out there has run into a similar problem, hopefully these meals can give y...
