make : naturally dyed easter eggs

This year Sofia and I took a stab at naturally-dyed Easter egg decorating.  While I admit it wasn't as vibrant as coloring with standard white eggs and food coloring, we still had so much fun making earthy golds and soot-colored greys.  Quite the un-traditional take, I think!  We wrapped a few of our eggs in rubber bands before letting them soak in the "dye" as an experiment, and while fun, unfortunately didn't make much of an artistic impact.  Here's what we used:

For an earthy, yellow-gold color:

• a few tablespoons of turmeric
• boiling water to cover
• tablespoon of white vinegar
• container for dye

For a lighter, ash-colored grey:

• around 1/4 c. smooshed blueberries
• boiling water to cover
• tablespoon of white vinegar
• container for dye

It's fun to get creative with Easter egg decorating - there are so many recipes floating around for even more gorgeous colors like jade, brown or violet.  We let our eggs sit at the minimum of an hour, though it's best to leave them overnight if you can.  Natural brown farmer's eggs like we've used here will display a different end result than plain white eggs.  The possibilities are endless, really!  And so much fun for grownups and littles alike.

Happy Easter to all of you!

I hope your holiday weekend was perfect, restful, and filled with sunshine.

  1. Oh glorious Easter! I love your eggs! They are gorgeous. I think I prefer these natural ones over the bright jelly bean colored ones & I really like your recipes & rubber band idea. We tried natural dye as well this year (& I too love using brown eggs). I cheated a bit though & boiled some of the eggs with the dye, as we always have to make so many (ensuring that there are enough Easter Eggs for the all boys to find at least some) Sneaking in a few moments this morning to see my favorite bloggers are up to(or if they even posted... I did even though I swore I wouldn't)-a bit of quiet for me on this busy day. Happy Easter Kate and Family!xxoo

  6. so cute! I think you can use white wax to make patterns on them in the dye. Never actually tried it myself so I could be wrong! Nice to pop past your space and see you've had a happy Easter. Thinking of you lots (even when I don't leave comments) xxx

bump : week 23

The sub-zero weather has kept us indoors, but it hasn't kept us from having the most amount of fun possible.  I've been enjoying hot cups of tea served with teaspoons of sugar and condensed milk, curling up with my favorite blanket and enjoying the tap-tap, nudge-nudge of the littlest De La Rosa.  Though I find myself playing catch up yet again (I'm 24 weeks!) I'm not complaining in the least bit.  I've had this little family of mine all to myself for a full four days with no work, no emails, no agenda and no pressure.   Ahhhhh... happy winter celebration, little baby. PS- did you know Erick finally launched his website ?  It's up, it's responsive, and it's gorgeous. I'm a proud muma bear.
