first hair cut

Sitting poolside getting her first trim

For many years of my life, through my childhood, adolescence, college years and more, my father has been the only person to cut my hair. Since moving to the city and over an hour's drive from my parent's house, I've had to find a salon. Quite frankly, I'm bummed about it. Nothing compares to being able to have haircuts at home! The thought of trimming Sofia's hair has been something we struggled with for two whole years - in fact, it's taken us this long to even consider it. I loved (and still love!) her unruly curls, the long locks in the back... it's just the wisps that were constantly dipping into her food and sticking with sweat in her eyes that I just couldn't bear to let her endure any longer.

Armed with lollys in each of her hands and her feet splashing into the side of the pool, my dad, Sofia's "tampa", snipped a tiny asymmetrical baby fringe onto our firstborn. It's amazing seeing things like this come full circle, remembering myself as a little one thinking how awesome it was that I had a dad that did something as cool as hairdressing for a living. Now my daughter is thinking the same thing, no doubt. While Sofia sure didn't make the experience easy, it was hilarious, and it was fun.

Sofia, I can't wait to tell you all about it.

Dad, you still amaze me.

  2. So sweet! My mother in law cuts my son's hair, while I loved his long locks too, I can't help loving his 'very boy' short haircut. :)

  5. It makes me a bit sad looking at this photo, only because I see Plum's future trim... waaaay in the future, but still in the future.

But the capture is perfect, seriously. Lollies in both hands, ha :)

  6. oh those bangs! such a sweet story too. my dad used to braid my hair; he had learned to braid his own hair when he was a hippy in the 70's and grew his hair down to his waist. what a guy :)

  8. I was very nostalgic about my daughter's first haircut as well! I ended up going with my dad to his barber of over 20 years, who is the same woman that cut my hair as a kid :) Must be something about girls hair that makes us nostalgic.

  9. That is such a great story! A kid's first haircut is such a special milestone and to share it with your dad makes it even better! I am sure he loved it too!

Week 27 Update

Hello fellow internet peoples.  Decided to give a HD video update for the beginning of my third trimester.  (WE SO EXCITED!)  It was a ton of fun to make, this time we were at home in Chicago.  Erick had a bunch of lighting equipment after all the interviews he did with the chicago school councils, so before he had to ship them back we took full advantage ;)  I'm learning more about codec and h.264 and prores 422 and although it makes absolutely no sense to me, maybe it will be useful knowledge in the future.  What do I know? It was obviously a very gesture laden, emotional, 10 minute interview.  I hope you all enjoy it.  It really is longer than I expected but instead of completely chopping it up, I decided to leave it how it is.  It's pure, natural, pregnant-y goodness of brain farts, odd humor, and searching for the right words.  If you make it to the end, remind me to give you a gold star or something.  I'll do it. ** A ...

bump : a thank you

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome on our littlest growing member of the De La Rosa family - we are so lucky and blessed, that is for sure!  Lots of time has been spent the past few weeks celebrating with friends and family, though a certain "weight" has been lifted now that it's truly out in the open.  (Ahhhh...)   Erick and I knew right away that this go-around, we were going to try everything we could to have the birth we wanted, so we've switched our prenatal care from a standard OBGYN practitioner to one of the only midwife groups in the state.  Although it is becoming more common, midwives and water births are still extremely difficult to come by.   In Illinois specifically, there are only two birthing centers in a 50 mile radius willing to offer this to us - and one of these didn't take our healthcare plan.  It's crazy how many long nights were spent researching on the web and phoning out to different practices, but I am so happ...
