urban garden : raised bed DIY

One of my goals for this summer was to build a raised bed garden; not much tastes better than freshly picked vegetables and fruit. The opportunity to facilitate learning around wholesome, homegrown food right here at home was one I have dreamt about teaching my children ever since I became a mom. It seemed like such a distant memory in the depths of winter, but now that our rainy season has taken a break we have headed into gardening with full force (and muddy toes!)

I wish I had taken more pictures during the construction of the bed itself, but we used this as a resource.

The bed contains a mixture of organic garden soil, mushroom compost, and a peat-moss topsoil enhancer.

This is our first year attempting to have green thumbs and I know I'll be happy even if we don't yield much. We have a variety of peppers planted, along with tomatoes, squash, and cucumber. I'm hoping to eventually add strawberries, lettuce and the carrots that we picked up from Silver Owl Moon Farm. I'll be updating as things progress, and regardless, it has been entirely too much fun getting outside as a family and getting dirt underneath our fingernails.

Digging in the earth is good for the soul.

  3. Yay, garden!

Good choices. Pro tip about strawberries: if you're starting from just seeds, they don't always grow well the first year. We attempted them two years ago and got barely two tiny little berries and - because of space constraint - didn't try again. But reading up on them, that's the info I found! So if you plant them this year, don't get discouraged. :)

Easter Weekend

Hello! Happy mid-week to you. This is the roll of photos we shot over our Easter weekend , and oh what a wonderful weekend it was. It was so nice to have family here to visit - even if the weather was cooler than we anticipated! We visited the redwoods in Felton, ate vegetarian burritos, went to the epic shoreside in Montara, and the brewing company in Half Moon Bay. Our hearts are full and our home is feeling quite empty now ;) As a side note, I've found a renewed love with film. This is a post for another time, but it bears mentioning here! There has been much on my mind re: photography, and hopefully this will be the space I can share that. For the curious, all the above were shot on a Nikon FM10 with Fuji Superia 400 speed film.

bump : week 22

I've said it before, but if I could pack up and move my entire family straight into the By The Barkers studio space, I would. Absolute heaven! As for our little one, he or she has been giving me strong, swift kicks - especially around bed time.  Waves and ripples dance across my belly as I lay in bed waiting, watching.  I'll admit, it's been difficult for Erick and I since we've decided to keep things a surprise as far as the gender.  We were both so used to the feeling of knowing with Sofia that it's made this pregnancy a completely unique experience.  My intuition keeps swaying back and forth wondering if this little one is a boy or girl, and judging by the way that I look, feel and eat, my best guess is that we have another little lady on the way. (Though, if you ask Sofia, she's already told us she thinks baby is a "bruh-der")  !!! Mamas out there, was your intuition right? Any tell-tale signs or...

welcoming fall: hiking together

A while back, I had posted about dreading the change of the season.  I was so caught up in my whirlwind of a summer, the beautiful weather, the bare feet, the music and late night dancing in the wilderness, camping, and vacations that I barely remembered or welcomed the un-rushed pace that comes with the beginning of fall. Living in the middle of the city has been a blessing for finding new, exciting and bustling places to eat and explore, but so many times I'm wishing for the opportunity to do something a little less... urban .  I grew up in the country, and Erick, in the city- so now we've been doing our best to give our child the best of both worlds. We took a drive about 40 minutes south of the city to a little place in the suburbs and welcomed the crisp and cool air that kissed our cheeks as we embarked on a tiny adventure in the forest.  Hiking with a toddler is such an enriching exper...
