WEDNESDAY FAMILY DAY - ON TRADITION

On Wednesdays, and almost certainly every Wednesday, we have kept a high standing tradition of spending the day together as a family.  When Erick and I were newly dating years ago, we coordinated our days off so we could spend one day a week together to lay around lazily and if we were lucky, grab a bite to eat.  Once married and with children, things have happily stayed the same-- something I'm eternally grateful for.  This week, we were off to Oak Park again for a delightful vegetarian lunch at Munch, which is a fantastic and eclectic little joint off of Marion St.  This little town is quickly becoming a regular favorite of ours, mainly because getting there is easy and walking around on nice days is even more enjoyable.

I'll admit, some days it really feels like our time together ends too quickly no matter how hard we try and fight it.  Erick has been working steadily on multiple filming projects and I couldn't be more proud.  I'm excited to see where all of the hard work will take him, and where after this year we end up as a family.  We've put what little free time we have into major efforts toward building both of our creative careers and are beginning to wonder when we'll finally be able to make that frightful jump into freelance.  But I digress, the day was altogether wonderful as it usually is, and Erick and I were fortunate enough to even sneak away to a movie later that night (for the SECOND week in a row!)  I know, I can't believe it either!  I'm so smitten. :)

Do any of you feel more comfortable when you have some form of a routine or tradition?

I'm curious as to what other families and/or couples do to make sure they stick together and strengthen their bonds.  Tradition is something grounding and immensely important to me.  I feel quite listless without a regular activity that is truly my own or one that I share with my family.  What are your thoughts?

(And if you haven't had a chance to already, you can enter for a chance to win some canvas kicks for your little one!  We're so excited to share this opportunity with you.  DASJ's first giveaway can be found here.)

  2. I think its so important that you all have a day a week to spend together. Sometimes life gets SO busy and people don't make time... I think thats a great tradition!

  3. I turn into a pumpkin if I haven't made time for myself or my family. We go on little walks every evening we are able to, while the weather is still nice --almost always on Thursday evenings. This past year we have had monthly date nights where Olive has a sleepover at Gramses and Pappy's. It's always difficult to spend the night away from her but I love having time to spend with Josh in small quiet restaurants or movie theater.

My days seem to flow better when I have a routine, but I'm not good at sticking to one.

Easter Weekend

Hello! Happy mid-week to you. This is the roll of photos we shot over our Easter weekend , and oh what a wonderful weekend it was. It was so nice to have family here to visit - even if the weather was cooler than we anticipated! We visited the redwoods in Felton, ate vegetarian burritos, went to the epic shoreside in Montara, and the brewing company in Half Moon Bay. Our hearts are full and our home is feeling quite empty now ;) As a side note, I've found a renewed love with film. This is a post for another time, but it bears mentioning here! There has been much on my mind re: photography, and hopefully this will be the space I can share that. For the curious, all the above were shot on a Nikon FM10 with Fuji Superia 400 speed film.

what sofia eats, v.1

grape tomatoes, avocado, grilled veggie burger and annie's cheddar bunnies             green seedless grapes with pancakes             cheddar potato pierogis, tangerine slices, garlic pearled couscous with corn           Diapers & Skinny Jeans will be slowly introducing more and more new, original content over the next coming weeks, and I'm excited to announce I'm bringing back the "What Sofia Eats" portion of the blog to you.  (Especially since it doesn't consist of rice cereal and mashed bananas anymore!)  Since I started a bit late, I only have three meals to show you this week-- but, I'm hoping to catch every meal for the next seven days.  I know I've personally struggled at times with finding inspiration for kiddo meals, so I figure if anyone else out there has run into a similar problem, hopefully these meals can give y...

welcoming fall: hiking together

A while back, I had posted about dreading the change of the season.  I was so caught up in my whirlwind of a summer, the beautiful weather, the bare feet, the music and late night dancing in the wilderness, camping, and vacations that I barely remembered or welcomed the un-rushed pace that comes with the beginning of fall. Living in the middle of the city has been a blessing for finding new, exciting and bustling places to eat and explore, but so many times I'm wishing for the opportunity to do something a little less... urban .  I grew up in the country, and Erick, in the city- so now we've been doing our best to give our child the best of both worlds. We took a drive about 40 minutes south of the city to a little place in the suburbs and welcomed the crisp and cool air that kissed our cheeks as we embarked on a tiny adventure in the forest.  Hiking with a toddler is such an enriching exper...
