shaken and shifting

Over the last few days I can sense a shift within me - knowing it's partially because of a close call at Erick's job that shook us both to our core.

Never before have either of us had "life flash before our eyes," but since that day, I am reminded at how quickly something could be taken away. As difficult as it is, I've made up my mind to stop focusing on what could have happened and instead rejoice in gratitude for the life we are blessed to spend another day... together.  It was such a strange thing, cars pummeling into retail stores, right? We are just so thankful that no one was seriously injured.

And life goes on.

This morning Sofia woke early and I tried coaxing her into cuddling in a bit longer in the big bed with Erick and I.  We stayed in for most of the day, lounging about and sneaking in a few afternoon naps (growing a human is exhausting!) before heading downtown to shop for groceries. I'm happy to say I've been much better at conscious shopping and planning our meals ahead of time.  Tonight's dinner was a slow-simmered stew of chorizo, red beans and short ribs - the warmth and spices were just what we needed on this January night.

Later this week we've planned some time away from work to spend together as a family. Erick has a birthday quickly approaching, and Sofia is in for a huge surprise on Saturday.

Hoping your week is lovely and wonderfully relaxing, as it should be... x

  5. Gah! I'm so glad everyone is safe! Such a strange accident. (Is that Erick walking in the store on the news?)

Does Sofia like to cuddle? I always try to get our little bean to snuggle in the covers in the mornings but she won't have it - always wants to crawl and climb on everyone. :)

Have a fun (and relaxing) weekend together! I'm looking forward to hearing all about it :)

  11. yikes! i'm so glad erick is okay. i've always let myself be afraid of the what-ifs in life, and you are totally right — we can't do that anymore. focus on the moment and be forever grateful, that's the way to roll. your posts these days are so wonderful, kate. from the photos to the words you write, there's a sense of calm and insight and observation of the world that is just beautiful. you go girl. xo.

the birthing of alba mae

From the beginning, this pregnancy seemed so much the same, yet so distinctly different all at once. I didn't get sick, I wasn't too turned away by my favorite foods, I had occasional heartburn here and there and overall, was able to relax and enjoy the experience.  What was strange was how differently I was carrying - having been told more times than I could count that I had looked as if I had "swallowed a basketball".  I think I was persuaded a few times in my head that maybe this was  different, maybe it really was a baby boy.  Yet still, in my heart I had an overwhelming intuition I would be holding another little girl in my arms, someone so very similar to her sister yet so distinctly different all at once. My little may flower. Saturday night, the air was warm and sticky.  Sofia, Erick and I read stories by a big window fan in her room trying to distract ourselves from the heat in our upstairs apartment. ...
